A SEMINAR ON "BEING A PARENT IN THE DIGITAL AGE" WAS HELD IN MELIKGAZI

In cooperation with Melikgazi Municipality and Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, a seminar on "Being a Parent in the Digital Age" was held online for parents to obtain information on safe technology use during the pandemic period.
In the information and awareness seminar that lasted for 2 days, the conditions brought by the digital age to complicate parenting experiences, how to use parental mediation approaches in the digital age, cyberbullying, one of the risks in the digital world, and parents' awareness of cyberbullying were discussed.
On the first day of the seminars, faculty members of Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Hasan Ali Yücel Education Faculty, Educational Sciences Department, Guidance and Psychological Counseling Department, Dr. Gamze İnan Kaya “Parent Mediation”, Dr. Metin Kocatürk, on the other hand, gave information on "Cyber Bullying". On the second day of the seminars, Assoc. Dr. Ali Çekiç, “Parental Stress and Digital Media”, Dr. İdris Kaya “Screen Addiction” and Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Hasan Ali Yücel Faculty of Education, Computer and Instructional Technologies Education Department Assoc. Dr. Duygu Mutlu Bayraktar organized seminars on “Useful Applications for Children”.
Making a statement on the subject, the Mayor of Melikgazi, Dr. Mustafa Palancioğlu said, “Digital technology is an excellent tool to establish and develop social relationships, but it also carries enormous risks for children. Information was given about the reflections of the stress experienced during the epidemic process on parents and children, ways to cope, and the issues to be considered regarding the risks of screen addiction during this period when children are at home.Settings to be made and applications to be used were recommended so that children can safely use mobile devices. At the same time, mobile applications have been proposed that will contribute to their cognitive and mental development. Awareness levels were determined with the information obtained from the form sent to the parents after the seminars. In the feedback received from the participant parents, they stated that the seminars were quite effective. We hope to do more such seminars.
