Melikgazi Mayor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Palancıoğlu issued a message on the 3rd anniversary of the devastating earthquakes of February 6, 2023, which affected 11 provinces and were described as the disaster of the century. While commemorating those who lost their lives in the earthquake, Mayor Palancıoğlu also emphasized the importance of building earthquake-resistant cities, stating: "Three years have passed since the February 6th earthquake, described as the disaster of the century and one of the biggest catastrophes our country has faced. The 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, centered in Kahramanmaraş, caused great destruction in 11 provinces and claimed the lives of more than 50,000 of our citizens. Three years have passed since this great catastrophe; however, the pain of the lives lost is still in our hearts. The February 6th earthquake once again highlighted the fact that we need to be more sensitive and conscious in the face of earthquake disasters, which are a reality of our country.” Mayor Palancıoğlu, stating that Melikgazi Municipality delivered aid to the region immediately after the earthquake, said the following: “As in every ordeal we have experienced, we were united in the February 6th earthquake, we stood together, and we overcame every difficulty together. Immediately after the disaster, we reached the earthquake zone with our search and rescue teams, construction equipment, containers, and aid trucks, and stood by our earthquake-stricken citizens. We participated in the aid mobilization with all our resources and saved many lives from under the rubble. We regularly delivered aid trucks to the region through our earthquake coordination center. To help life return to normal after the earthquake, as Melikgazi Municipality, we established a market in Elbistan, and then another in Adıyaman. We established a living area in Dulkadiroğlu district. We organized iftars (fast-breaking meals). We tried with all our might to be by the side of our earthquake-stricken brothers and sisters. In this context, as Melikgazi Municipality, we also carried out urban transformation..." We are taking significant steps in this area as well, and we are resolutely continuing our efforts to build a more robust district. We are continuing these efforts with our horizontal architecture project and strong inspection mechanisms. Let's not forget that an earthquake is a natural disaster, and being prepared for it is the most important measure to take. On this occasion, I pray to God for mercy for all our citizens who lost their lives in the earthquake. May God protect our country and our nation from all kinds of disasters, and may He not test us with such great sorrows again."
